North Elementary, located on Highway 57 North, currently serves 397 children in grades Kindergarten through sixth. The building, constructed in 1955 and renovated in 1990, provides a safe and welcoming environment conducive to learning with a staff dedicated to helping all students reach their potential. The facility includes 16 classrooms, 2 resource rooms, an auditorium, gymnasium, library, art/music suite, 3 temporary classrooms and a large playground including athletic fields. The faculty, staff and parents accept and share the responsibility of providing students within a great place for children to grow and learn. The PTO is key to the successful operation of the school. Volunteers support school activities in the library, mentoring students, assisting in classrooms, sponsoring the yearbook, book fair and assisting with many special events throughout the year.
Our curriculum is based on the Indiana Academic Standards and is supplemented with special programs and methods that include the Student Success Process (SSP), Data Folders and Data Dashboards, the Simple Six writing process, Dynamic Indicators for Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), Accelerated Reader, Study Island, and Education City. Through collaboration of general education and resource teachers, individual student needs are met. Faculty members are determined to provide the highest quality educational opportunities for all students.
Students in first through sixth grades have an opportunity to participate in numerous after-school enrichment activities including: Just Say No, Spell Bowl, Math Bowl, Chess Club, jump Rope Club, and Media Club, along with boys and girls basketball and volleyball. Fifth and sixth grade students also participate in Student Council, assisting with various activities throughout the school and serving as role models and leaders for the K-6 student body. During the school year students look forward to the Talent Show, Red Ribbon Week, Checker Tournament and special celebrations.
Each day at North begins with the student body assembled in the auditorium. The Pledge of Allegiance is recited, announcements are made, and a moment of silence is observed. The lifelong guidelines of Truthfulness, Trustworthiness, Active Listening, No Put Downs, and doing your Personal Best are emphasized during this time.
