School Hours
Beginning the day:
School begins at 8:00 AM. The tardy bell rings at 8:15 AM, but we expect students to be in school at 8:00 AM. If your child is arriving after 8:00 AM they are late!
No students should arrive in the building before 7:40 AM. Breakfast is served beginning at 7:40 AM. Students who are not eating breakfast are to walk to the gymnasium.
Dismissal:
Kindergartners are dismissed first. They will be dismissed at 2:50 PM. Walkers and car riders are dismissed at 2:55 PM. Bus riders are dismissed at
3:00 PM.
No cars are allowed on the playground area when the buses are loading after school.
Some students are picked up near the city pool. There is an adult on duty to keep this area orderly.
There are always teachers on duty near the front door area to keep that area orderly during dismissal.
Safety Concerns
If you pick your child up you need to be aware that we will not let students cross the street. There is far too much traffic and far too many students to allow that. Therefore, you must either park next to the curb on 6th St. or park your car in the parking lot and get out of your car to escort your child across the street.
Please do not make illegal u-turns in front of our school.
Please do not drop your child off on the wrong side of the street. This causes unnecessary congestion and is unsafe.
We cannot walk students out to cars that are double parked. If you are double parked you are blocking traffic. If you are not parked next to the curb we will not allow your child to leave the school grounds. Please do not double park.
Please be sure that you use appropriate child restraint in your vehicles as you leave.
Please be considerate of others and keep the traffic moving.
Please be patient.
Expect more from your child
At North we continue to try to keep our expectations high. Every day we expect students to behave better and achieve more academically than they did the day before. I suggest that if we don’t set our expectations higher we will be doing our children and our community a disservice. With this in mind I ask you to expect more from your child. Expect them to do better in school. Expect them to read more at home. Expect them to be better behaved at school. Expect them to do more chores at home. Expect them to be more responsible. You are the first and best teacher your child will ever have. Students who have supportive parents who set high expectations are almost always successful in school.
Please be supportive of your teacher in front of your child. If you say something negative about your child’s teacher in front of your child they will most likely not work for that teacher like they would if you were only saying positive things about them.
Report your child absent
If your child is going to be absent you need to be sure to call us before 8:30 AM. If you don’t call we will have to call you. Any time your child goes to a doctor we need a copy of the note that excuses them from school.
Communicate with your teacher
Please be sure to talk to your teacher about any concerns that are specific to your child. You are welcome to email them at any time.
Please understand that your teacher has twenty plus students and is doing a multitude of things all day long. A written note is the best way to be sure that the teacher remembers something about your child. Also, just because you told last year’s teacher something does not mean that this year’s teachers know about it. Please be sure to inform your teacher about things that may interfere with your child’s learning.
We want to be sure that all students get home safely. We do not let students change the way that they go home unless we have a note from home. Please send a note to your child’s teacher if the way they go home changes.
Five things all children need
1. Ten hours of sleep
2. Plenty of exercise after school
3. Healthy meals
4. Less Television
5. More reading at home
Communicate with your school
You can go to www.wcs.k12.in.us to find North Elementary's link. Once you are at the North website you may check on your child’s progress by clicking the Harmony link at the top of the page. This year we are registering students for school on Harmony. We have also added the lunch component. This means that you can check your child’s balance and see a record of when they ate the school lunch. We are excited about these additions and hope that you will find them most helpful.
We will be communicating more through the school website throughout the year. Plan to check the website regularly for more information.
Tobacco free zone
North Elementary and all Washington Community Schools are now tobacco free zones. If you visit our properties please remember that tobacco use is not allowed on any school property.
